Jailbreak!

It's been long enough. While my first puzzle over a year ago was a success... it was also incredibly underwhelming in a lot of ways. Namely how easy it was to solve once you knew the solution. Just didn't tickle my fancy. This time is different. Not only did I set out to make a puzzle that's hard to solve... but also hard to RE-solve. And guess who I chose as my first victim? 😈

The Dos, Don'ts and If You Dares

Sorry for the delay! This week I'm taking on another one of those race car parts that should really be reserved for a CNC. But I like a good challenge. And somewhere the lathe got involved... maybe challenge isn't the right word for it 0_o

I made a Heat Treat Furnace!

Yup... this one's been a long time coming. But it finally happened. I made a heat treat furnace... and it's AWESOME. This project kicked my ass so give props to my wife for pulling this video right out of thin air. I couldn't do this without her!

P.S. I apologize for absence as of late, so hopefully a 34 minute video makes up for that :).

P.P.S. I'll add a list of parts of what I used once I'm able to get that all together.

So a lathe walks into a bar... test

What was the first thing I did when getting the free lathe? Measure how good it was. What was the second thing did? Pretend like that never happened. But not anymore. The time for a definitive test of the lathes performance has arrived... with a good old fashioned bar test. Not to be confused with the legal bar.... though that somehow seems fitting here too.

My lathe has been keeping a secret...

So I'm finally doing it. After 10 months I'm finally addressing the spindle play in the free lathe... And I could hardly believe what I found. Any guesses? The thumbnail is a good hint.

Also curious to hear what you guys think of this different format? Thanks as always for the support!

A CUT Above the Rest

A whole lot going on in this video and honestly if you go by pure part count, this might be the most yet. Milling, Lathing, Grinding, Eureka-ing and Wifing. What more could one ask for?

This Tool Makes a VERY Important Shape

Where's the best place to pick up? Where you left off of course. Just because I got a little sidetracked by a little cross country road trip last video doesn't mean I've forgotten Yee Olde Eureka tool. So let's finish it off. And maybe we'll even demonstrate the beautiful movement it makes on a "gear cutter" ;)

Giveaway!

Hey Everyone!

A patron named Erik put his multicolor 3D printer to working making a ton of these awesome keychains. So many in fact that I don't know what to do with them. So I'm giving them away to you for free! We have a nice "IM" square with some delicious chamfers and corner rounds. And there is a very hungry OG Box Of Shame.

If you are in the United States and would like one or both send me a private message here on Patreon with your preference (IM, BOS or Both) and shipping...

Half of a Great Idea

How have I managed to avoid this core component of a machinists’ repertoire for so long? The time has come… for gears. But I like making tools a lot more than I like making not tools. So before I can make any gear, naturally, I need to make the gear cutter. Which requires making a few other tools, too. So many tools, in fact, that it will take me two videos to finish this project. And maybe by the end of this adventure I will properly be able to say "Eureka!".

Off Week Update

Hey Everyone!

Firstly I want to say thank you all for the feedback in the latest product poll! You all have a lot of great ideas that got me thinking about what is actually possible with the channel, its future, and making machining more accessible to everyone. This was INVALUABLE!

Also, just to clarify. The Youtube project videos aren't going anywhere. So REST AT EASE!

On a related note. We hired our first part time contractor! Her name is Sierra and while we're not exactly...

I need your brain.

When I started Inheritance Machining over two years ago, I wanted to do something that would let me spend more time in my shop. Along the way I've tried to create videos that make machining interesting, accessible, and honestly cool.

To everyone who has followed me and watched my videos so far, thank you! I am so glad you’re here.

But now, I need your help. I want to make something new. Something that will really help more people get into machining and take their knowledge up a ...

Do you even GRIND, Bro?

Hey everyone!

The lathe has been glaring at me for 4 months, it’s time to put it to work. And by "it", I mean me. Which, as you might expect, never goes quickly. And while I can’t promise a super satisfying reveal, can I tempt you with a negative side project total? Who would have believed it?!

One Step Forward, One Step Back

Hey Everyone!

From my previous post, and the subject of the next video, got the new internal spindle mounted on the tool post grinder! Sure saved a butt load of work not having to making my own. But not everything went smoothly (does it ever?). I seem to find myself playing "electrician" way more than I ever thought I would when I started all this. But we persevered... Use case is a little vague from the pics but I'm sure some can guess what I'm into. Any takers?

The Cube With ONLY One Side

(DOWNLOAD) Mobius Cube

Hello Micrometer Patrons!

Attached are the 3d model (.step and .f3d) for the mobius cube project as well as the drawings I used that were helpful during the build.

No hardware needed for this one, just a hunk of metal a little larger than 3" cubed. Unless of course you plan to 3D print. Then I'm sure you already know what to do.

If you end up making one yourself or even a different interpretation of the design I would love to see it!

Happy Machining!

Off Week Update... Number 2!

Hey Everyone!

A little late to the draw on this one but I thought I would update anyway. The next video's project is wrapped up and edited. And it was WAY more than I thought I was getting myself into. Both mentally and financially. The "consumables" budget was through the roof on this one! And a visit (but not a long one) to the BOS. I'm still having a bit of fun teasing what it is though so I wont give that away but you can expect to see the video on here Thursday at 10am EDT. View Post

Shop Update

Hey Everyone! No video this week so I thought I would give you a little update on what's been going on.

BTW if you like this sort of thing for off weeks/between videos let me know in the comments!

I ended up using basically all of the precious time between videos to finish up the second upright for Formula Kentucky. And it surprisingly went way faster than I expected. Where number 1 took 23 hours to complete. Number 2 was only 14 hours of work! Apparently my time estimates for cam...

GRINDING On All Cylinders

In all of my projects there has been one major limitation I have yet to overcome. Precision cylindrical grinding. It's prevented me from hardening my parts which really should be hardened. And has resulted in some of my tooling coming out.... less than stellar. But that all changes today!

I Raced a $600,000 CNC Machine

I got the opportunity to support my alma mater's Formula SAE (Formula Student) team again this year and when presented with what parts they needed, couldn't resist jumping at the hardest one! And as if the stakes weren't high enough already, I challenged my friend Craig to a race. Where he'll be using his $600,000 5 axis CNC milling machine. The results may surprise you. I mean they did me!

WANTED: Dead or a LIVE CENTER

Being that the new lathe is quite a bit smaller than my grandfather's, I'm missing a few of the essential bits of tooling I'll need to make it useable. Sure there are issues with the lathe to address still, but never mind that. I'm going to need a live center eventually and of course I want the nicest one available. But I certainly don't want to pay the $1000 price tag for a Royal. So I'm gonna see if I can make my own! Apparently putting the cart before the horse is my middle name.
